Online Farm Trials

Online Farm Trials is an interoperable web spatial information service maintained by Federation University Australia. The Online Farm Trials (OFT) project is funded and supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), and was initiated in 2013 with the aim of using the latest technology to improve access to, and adoption of, grains industry research data and information. Federation University Australia's Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation is leading the project to develop and deliver the OFT resources online. The project has a strong collaborative approach, working with a range of crop research groups, industry experts and grain industry organisations to ensure the outcomes are highly relevant, practical and beneficial.

Lineage Online Farm Trials (OFT) is a web based system that provides open and free access to on-farm, or field based, cropping research trial data and information. Interactive maps, searching and viewing tools are provided to enable quick and easy access to relevant information on a range of cropping topics, issues and methods. A Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation collaboration, OFT hosts past and present research trials undertaken and contributed by a range of grower and farming systems groups, government researchers, universities and private industry throughout Australia. OFT offers a central online source of knowledge and information to support decision making, practice change and improvement of farm profitability. OFT has a collaborative approach through its engagement with grower groups, research organisations, agricultural experts and grain industry organisations. This ensures the outcomes are highly relevant, practical and beneficial for growers. OFT provides support and tools for researchers and organisations to digitise, upload, manage and publish their past and current trial information, data, documents and other digital content.
Method As at May 2020, Online Farm Trials contains over 6,500 trials from 82 contributing organisations. These trials (from 1884 to 2020) include cereal trials (54%), pulse trials (19%) and oilseed trials (13%), with 58 different crop types having been recorded in the system. Trial design information captured in the project details include number of replications and the use of randomisation and/or blocking. Unusual factors impacting the trial results and outcomes are also noted for users.
